NEWBERRY, S.C. (AP) — Four teenagers were shot dead within hours of each other in a small South Carolina city over the weekend, prompting the area high school to switch to virtual learning while officers stepped up patrols, authorities said.

No arrests have been made in the shooting early Sunday in Newberry that killed a 16-year-old and in the deaths of three teens in a shooting that afternoon about two blocks away in the city of 10,200 people, Newberry Police Chief Chief Kevin Goodman said.

New Italian church head faces demands for abuse inquiry

New Italian church head faces demands for abuse inquiry

Pope Francis has named a bishop in his own image as the new head of the Italian bishops conference. Cardinal Matteo Zuppi's nomination was announced Tuesday during the second day of a meeting of the conference. Zuppi is currently the archbishop of Bologna and has long been affiliated with the Sant'Egidio Community, a Catholic charity particularly close to Francis. The Italian Catholic Church is coming under increasing pressure to confront its legacy of clergy sexual abuse with an independent inquiry. The Italian church is one of the few in western Europe that has not opened its archives to independent researchers to establish the scope of abuse and cover-up in recent decades.

KYIV, Ukraine — As the conflict in Ukraine enters its fourth month, Russian troops appear to be on the cusp of a breakthrough in the disputed Donbas region, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warning of difficult weeks ahead and accusing Moscow of waging "total war" against his country.

Best Buy's Q1 results shows inflation's bite

Best Buy Co. posted first-quarter results that showed shoppers pulled back on their spending and higher costs ate into profits. The nation's largest consumer electronics chain also cut its annual outlook on Tuesday, citing a deteriorating economic environment. Best Buy was among a handful of big winners in the pandemic, as shoppers flocked to its stores and website to buy equipment to furnish home offices or cater to their children's needs for virtual learning. But like many retailers, Best Buy is struggling with rising costs for everything from labor to shipping as supply chain backups hit companies worldwide. The electronics chain also has had to navigate global chip shortages, soaring fuel costs and another round of COVID-19 lockdowns in China.

More turn to UK food banks as food and fuel bills soar

Across Britain, food banks and community food hubs that helped struggling families, older people and the homeless during the pandemic are now seeing soaring demand. Skyrocketing energy and food bills are pushing millions deeper into financial hardship, and increasing numbers cannot afford to buy groceries. The cost of food and fuel in the U.K. has risen sharply since late last year, with inflation reaching the highest level in 40 years. In April, millions of families saw their annual energy bill jump by 54%, and another energy price hike is expected in October. Britain's Conservative government has been criticized for not doing enough to ease the crisis.

UN aims to transfer 6,750 Ethiopians trapped in Yemen war

The U.N. migration agency says it's aiming to transfer at least 6,750 Ethiopian migrants from war-torn Yemen to their home country in the coming months. It appealed on Tuesday for $7.5 million to assist their return. The agency says it has transferred more than 600 migrants, including 60 unaccompanied children, to Ethiopia on three flights so far this year. It says more flights are planned between Yemen's port city of Aden and the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa. Yemen's civil war has not prevented migrants from entering the country, desperate to make their way to neighboring Saudi Arabia to find jobs as housekeepers, servants and construction workers.

GOP takes Oz's side in Pa. Senate race vote-counting lawsuit

The national Republican Party is taking the side of celebrity heart surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania's neck-and-neck GOP primary contest for U.S. Senate and opposing a lawsuit by former hedge fund CEO David McCormick. Tuesday is the deadline for counties to report their unofficial results to the state. McCormick wants a state court to require counties to count mail-in ballots that lack a required handwritten date on the return envelope. The Republican National Committee's chief counsel, Matt Raymer, says "changing the rules when ballots are already being counted harms the integrity of our elections." Oz has led McCormick in a race close enough to trigger Pennsylvania's automatic recount law.

Myanmar court gives go-ahead for Suu Kyi corruption trial

A court in Myanmar has ruled that a corruption trial for ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi and three political colleagues will continue after finding that prosecutors presented sufficient evidence for their indictment. Suu Kyi, who was forced from office in a military takeover last year, has been charged with 11 counts of corruption, each punishable by up to 15 years in prison. The corruption cases are among a large number of charges under which the military is prosecuting her. Suu Kyi's supporters and independent analysts say the charges are politically motivated and an attempt to discredit her and legitimize the military's seizure of power.

Virtual reality brings portable Taser training to police

The company best known for developing the Taser is expanding virtual reality and immersive training to help encourage police officers across the U.S. to more regularly train with less-than-lethal weapons. The virtual reality training being launched by Axon on Tuesday gives officers an opportunity to train with their Tasers in different scenarios to make the weapon more effective and reduce the chance the officer would use a firearm instead. The portable training kit fits into a duffel bag. Police departments can implement such a training during roll calls or for officers between calls.

Taliban say deal signed with UAE firm to manage airports

The Taliban say they've signed a deal allowing an Emirati company to manage three airports in Afghanistan after the fall of the country's U.S.-backed government. However, the United Arab Emirates didn't immediately acknowledge the deal on Tuesday. The Taliban announced that under the deal, the Abu Dhabi-based firm GAAC Solutions would manage the airports in Herat, Kabul and Kandahar. They held a news conference in Kabul in which they signed the deal with an individual they identified as a managing director for GAAC. However, that firm and other officials in the UAE did not acknowledge the deal and did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Stock market slump unsettling Americans eying retirement

Americans on the cusp of retiring are facing a tough choice as they watch their nest eggs shrink: Stay the course or keep working. A stock market slump this year has taken a big bite out of investors' portfolios, including retirement plans like 401(k)s. The S&P 500, the benchmark for many index funds, is down about 17% since its all-time high in early January. The sharp reversal after a banner 2021 for Wall Street has been particularly unsettling for those who have been planning to retire sooner, rather than later, and banking on a healthier stock portfolio to help fund their post-work lifestyle.
